After collecting some unforgettable memories in Jaffna Dutch Fort, I visited one of Jaffna's precious destinations. Having a long history about 150 years, Jaffna Public library is considered as one of the best libraries in south Asia. Really a gem of the island nation. The library is a symbol of the traditional culture.

In 1842 P.A. Dyke and P.C. Grenier the government officers of the region established a reading room for the first time. That is how the library established. The library had 844 volumes of books and 30 magazines. The place could easily accommodate 50 persons.

In 1983 during a riot happens between two ethnics in the nation, the Public Library was set to burn by some political backed criminals making the whole country in a pain. A part of the library was completely burnt into ashes with a thousand of books and documents.

It caused a huge damage to the library, region as well as the country. A lot of well-educated people shed their tears. The gem was burnt. After that during the civil war time, the library was in a great risk, fortunately both the military groups didn't harm to this valuable place. Even after passing a struggling time period, the place is still shining. A quiet, calm and silenced place. The proud of Yalpanam.
